Metallic Paint

Metallic paint with silver particles

Metallic paints can be seen as solid car paint, only with a small quantity of powdered metal added. This automotive paint shines bright like a diamond. The shine in silver paint comes from a small amount of aluminium powder mixed into car spray paint. The metal particles in metallic paint pick up and reflect the light, creating shine. The metallic effect can be enhanced when spraying multiple layers of metallic paint and lacquer (clear coat). Metallic paint looks best under direct sunlight.

Clear coat spray for optimum protection

Because metallic car paint can only be made in 1K quality, metallic paint requires a clear coat. Once activated, a 2-component clear coat is scratch resistant, petrol resistant, chemical resistant and does not yellow due to UV rays. Clear coat determines the gloss degree of your car, motorcycle, caravan or any other vehicle. Clear varnish is a clear transparent hard protective finish or film. It is applied over car spray paints as a final step to achieve a film for gloss and protection.

SprayMax clear coat spray

SprayMax is a patented aerosol technology for professional users. The spray pattern of SprayMax spray cans is comparable to a spray gun but delivers less overspray. The painting system is used for repairs and spot repairs in the automotive sector and by industrial users and painters.

Difference Between Metallic and Pearlescent Paint

Whereas a metallic paint job adds powdered metal to its mixture, a pearlescent paint job swaps this for ceramic crystals (also known as mica). What's appealing about pearlescent finishes is that the crystal details in the paint not only reflect light more than solid paint, but it also refracts the light too. It splits the light into different colours, giving pearl paint the potential to show off interesting effects.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose metallic paint?

Metallic paints give your car a unique and striking appearance by using tiny metal particles that create light reflection. This results in a depth and shine that you won't get with solid paints. Additionally, metallic paints are better at concealing small imperfections.

Is metallic paint better?

Metallic paint is not better than solid paint and does not offer better scratch protection, despite the metal particles it contains. Since metallic paint is only available in 1K car paint, it does not contain a hardener and must always be finished with a clear coat. We recommend using a 2K clear coat for an optimal finish, so the paint achieves the same strength as 2K car paint, which does contain a hardener. The advantage of 2K car paint is that it does not require a clear coat, as the paint itself is strong enough due to the hardener.

Is metallic paint more expensive?

Metallic paint is often more expensive when purchasing a new car due to the more complex spraying process. However, when you order custom car paint from us, there is no difference in price whether you choose a solid colour or a metallic colour – the price is the same. Metallic paint is, however, exclusively available in 1K car paint, while solid colours are available in both 1K and 2K car paints. This is because the metallic particles in the paint react with the hardener in the 2K paint.

How many layers of metallic paint?

For metallic paints, it is recommended to apply at least three layers. This ensures optimal depth and gloss of the colour. Make sure each layer is thoroughly dry before applying the next for the best results. We also recommend using a 2K clear coat for the optimal finish.

What is the difference between metallic and regular paint?

The main difference between metallic and regular paint lies in the finish. Metallic paint contains fine metal particles that create a shimmering effect, giving the paint depth and gloss. Regular paint does not have these particles, resulting in a more uniform, matte appearance. Metallic paint reflects light in a unique way, giving the car a dynamic look, especially in varying light conditions. If you're looking for a more eye-catching appearance, metallic paint is definitely a great choice!

What is the advantage of metallic paint?

Metallic paint offers a unique depth and gloss that you can't achieve with regular (solid) paint. It reflects light in a way that gives the car a luxurious appearance and better conceals small imperfections.

Do I have metallic paint?

To determine if you have metallic paint, look at the colour and gloss effect of your car's paint. Metallic paints contain small particles that reflect light, giving them a shiny and sparkling appearance. If your car has a gloss with a depth effect and the colour changes under different lighting, you likely have metallic paint. If you're unsure, feel free to contact us for more information!

Can I spray metallic paint?

Yes, you can spray metallic paint! Make sure to use the right technique and materials for the best results. It's important to apply several thin coats for a smooth, even finish. Our metallic paints are available in spray cans, tins, and touch-up pens.

What is a metallic colour for a car?
