Frequently asked questions about Spray Paints

How do I use a spray can?

Before using a spray can, make sure to shake it well. When spraying with a spray can, always work in a space that is at room temperature. The spray can itself should also be at room temperature.

How much can I spray with a spray can?

A 400ml spray can covers approximately 1.5 to 2 m², depending on the material porosity and layer thickness. For larger projects or multiple layers, we recommend accounting for an extra 10% to ensure you don't run out halfway through.

What is the drying time for RAL spray paint?

The drying time of RAL spray paint depends on temperature, layer thickness, humidity, and the temperature of the object you're spraying. These factors can affect the drying time of the car paint. However, this RAL paint is known for its quick drying time. This means the paint will be dust-dry after 10 minutes and can be overpainted with clear coat after 15 minutes.

Should I finish RAL paint with clear coat?

Finishing RAL color paint with a clear coat is always a good idea! However, if you're using the spray paint indoors, it’s not immediately necessary to protect the color from external influences. If you're using the RAL paint outdoors, where it needs to be more resistant to weather, acids, scratches, and impacts, we always recommend spraying a clear coat over the RAL paint!

How much car paint do I need?

This depends on the size of the damage, the type of paint, the surface, and your spraying technique. For a small panel like a mirror cap, you'll need approximately 100–150 ml; for a door handle or trim, about 100 ml; for a bumper corner or fender, around 200–300 ml; for an entire bumper, 400–500 ml; and for a full door or hood, approximately 500–700 ml. For a full respray of the car, this can add up to around 3–4 liters, depending on the color and coverage. We always recommend calculating 10% extra to ensure you don’t run out halfway through.

How long is a 2K spray can usable after activation?

24 hours. After activating the 2K spray can, the two components will mix, starting the curing process, making the spray can usable for 24 hours.

What is car spray paint used for?

Car spray paint is automotive aerosol paint for repairing scratches, chips and body panels without a spray gun. It is suitable for spot repairs, bumper corners, mirror caps, wheel trims and small panels.

Aerosol car paint can be applied to primed metal, prepared plastic, filler and previously painted surfaces. It is useful for colour repairs on vehicles from brands such as Volkswagen, BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, Jaguar and Land Rover.

For larger repairs or a full respray, paint tins and spray-gun application are usually the better choice, especially when an even finish across multiple panels is required.

How to choose the right car spray paint

The best car spray paint depends on the colour, paint system, finish and surface you are repairing.

  • By paint code – use the manufacturer paint code for the most accurate colour match
  • By 1K or 2K system – choose based on ease of use, durability and whether a hardener is required
  • By finish – select solid, metallic, pearlescent, gloss, satin or matte depending on the original finish
  • By substrate – match the system to metal, plastic, filler or existing paintwork

OEM colour matching helps with popular colours such as BMW Alpine White, Audi Mythos Black, Mercedes-Benz Obsidian Black and Land Rover Santorini Black. If the paint code is missing, colour scanning or colour identification can help find the closest suitable match.

1K vs 2K car spray paint

1K car spray paint dries by solvent evaporation. 2K car spray paint contains a hardener and cures chemically for a tougher finish.

  • 1K car spray paint is suited to colour-matched cosmetic repairs, smaller DIY jobs and basecoat systems that are finished with clear coat
  • 2K car spray paint is suited to harder-wearing repairs where scratch, petrol, chemical and weather resistance are important
  • Metallic and pearlescent basecoats normally require clear coat or lacquer for gloss and protection
  • Many 2K direct gloss aerosols can be used without a separate clear coat

Do you need primer or clear coat?

Primer is needed on bare metal, filler, sanded-through areas and many plastics. Plastic bumpers often need plastic primer or an adhesion promoter before colour is applied.

Clear coat or lacquer is usually required over most basecoat, metallic and pearlescent colours. It adds gloss, depth and protection to the colour layer.

Selected 2K direct gloss aerosols usually do not need a separate clear coat. Always choose products that are compatible within the same paint system.

Use car spray paint in a well-ventilated area and wear suitable respiratory protection, especially when applying 2K products.

How to spray car paint yourself

Good preparation is the key to a smooth aerosol paint repair. Work in thin coats and allow the correct flash-off time between layers.

  1. Clean and degrease the repair area
  2. Sand the surface and feather the edges
  3. Apply primer if needed
  4. Spray 2 to 3 light colour coats
  5. Allow flash-off time between coats
  6. Apply clear coat if required
  7. Let the paint cure before polishing or regular use

Touch-dry paint is not the same as fully cured paint. Drying time and curing time depend on the product, temperature, layer thickness and paint system.

Several thin coats help reduce runs, orange peel and uneven coverage. If in doubt, choose a compatible primer, colour coat and clear coat system.

Car spray paint colours and finishes

Solid colours

Solid colours are often the most straightforward option for colour repairs. They are commonly used for simple cosmetic repairs and direct gloss systems.

Metallic finishes

Metallic car spray paint contains fine effect flakes that create sparkle and depth. Metallic basecoats are normally finished with clear coat for gloss and protection.

Pearlescent finishes

Pearlescent spray paint gives extra depth and colour shift depending on the light and viewing angle. Pearl colours also need clear coat to protect and enhance the finish.

Exact colour matching

Exact OEM colour matching helps with repairs on brands such as Volkswagen, BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, Jaguar and Land Rover. Car spray paint can be mixed to the manufacturer colour code or identified using colour matching support when the code is unavailable.

Gloss levels such as gloss, satin, matte and ultra-matte are available for selected systems and finishes.

What is the difference between 1K and 2K spray paint?

Can I use car spray paint on plastic bumpers?

Yes, car spray paint can be used on prepared plastic bumpers. Many plastics need plastic primer or an adhesion promoter before the colour coat is applied.
