2K Car Paint
2K Car Paint
2K car paint is a two-pack automotive paint made from colour paint and hardener. Once activated, it chemically cures to create a hard, durable finish with strong scratch resistance, petrol resistance, UV resistance, chemical resistance and long-term durability.
This type of paint is suitable for solid direct gloss finishes, spot repairs and larger refinishing jobs. At CROP, 2K automotive paint is available as a spray can or in a can, mixed to order by colour code, OEM colour, RAL number or NCS shade.
- Paint + hardener: Two components that chemically cure after activation.
- Direct gloss solid colours: Suitable for solid colours in different gloss levels.
- Spray can or can: Choose aerosol for smaller jobs or a can for spray gun use.
- Mixed to colour code: Available in OEM colours, RAL colours and NCS shades.
- For repairs and resprays: Suitable for spot repairs, parts, panels and larger refinishing work.

Why choose 2K car paint?
Choose 2K car paint if you want a harder-wearing finish than standard 1K paint. It is designed for users who need a durable automotive topcoat rather than a quick temporary repair.
- Higher durability than 1K: Suitable for parts and panels exposed to daily use.
- Better petrol and chemical resistance: Useful for motorcycle parts, fuel areas, alloy wheels and workshop applications.
- UV resistance: Helps the finish remain stable under sunlight.
- Direct gloss finish: Solid colours can be sprayed as a finished topcoat.
- Long-term result: A good choice for durable repairs and refinishing work.
2K paint is commonly used for panel repair, bumper repair, motorcycle parts, alloy wheels, loose parts and full resprays. It is suitable for solid colours on vehicles such as BMW, Audi, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, Jaguar and Land Rover when the correct colour code or colour name is available.

1K vs 2K car paint
1K paint dries by solvent evaporation, while 2K paint cures chemically with hardener for a more durable finish.
| Paint type | How it works | Best used for |
|---|---|---|
| 1K car paint | Dries by solvent evaporation and is often used as a basecoat. | Metallic and pearlescent colours, quick repairs and systems finished with clear coat. |
| 2K car paint | Cures chemically with hardener for a harder and more resistant finish. | Solid direct gloss colours, durable repairs, high-wear areas and professional refinishing. |
Choose 1K car paint for metallic or pearlescent basecoat systems where a separate clear coat is applied. Choose 2K paint for solid direct gloss colours where durability, scratch resistance and chemical resistance are important.
Metallic and pearl finishes are usually best applied as a 1K basecoat with 2K clear coat. For that system, view our 2K clear coat and clear coats.
2K car paint spray can or can?
2K paint is available as an aerosol spray can or as paint in a can for spray gun application. Both options can offer the same colour match and 2K durability, but they are designed for different types of work.
| Choose this | Best for | Application |
|---|---|---|
| 2K spray can | Small repairs, mirrors, trims, spot repairs and loose parts. | Activated aerosol spray can. |
| 2K paint in a can | Larger panels, full resprays and spray gun work. | Mixed with hardener and applied with a paint spray gun. |
Choose a spray can if...
- You are repairing a small area or loose part.
- You do not want to use a spray gun.
- You need a direct gloss solid colour in a convenient aerosol.
- You are working on trims, mirrors, small panels or spot repairs.
Choose a can if...
- You are spraying larger panels or multiple parts.
- You are using a paint spray gun.
- You need more control over spray pattern and application.
- You are working on a full respray or professional refinishing job.
Colour matching is based on the official colour code or colour name where available. Browse our car paint spray, car paint in can and paint spray guns.
Colours, gloss levels and finish system
CROP 2K paint can be mixed to order in OEM colours, RAL colours and NCS shades. It is mainly used for solid colours where the paint itself creates the final finish.
Choose high gloss for an OEM-like direct gloss finish. Choose semi-gloss where a softer sheen is required, or choose matte and ultra matte for styling, parts or custom finishes.
- High gloss: 100% gloss level
- Semi-gloss: 50% gloss level
- Satin matte: 30% gloss level
- Matte: 10% gloss level
- Ultra matte: 0.5% gloss level
Can 2K car paint be metallic or pearl?
2K direct gloss paint is usually intended for solid colours. Metallic and pearlescent finishes normally require a basecoat and clear coat system, where the colour is applied as 1K basecoat and then finished with 2K clear coat.
If you need a metallic or pearl car colour, choose 1K car paint as the basecoat and finish it with a suitable 2K clear coat.
Do you need clear coat over 2K paint?
Clear coat is usually not necessary over solid 2K direct gloss paint because the paint cures as a finished topcoat. However, clear coat may be chosen for extra layer build, extra protection or a specific finish where the paint system allows it.
For basecoat and clear coat systems, clear coat is required because the basecoat provides colour but not the final durable topcoat.
How to apply 2K car paint
Good preparation is essential when applying 2K paint. The surface must be clean, sanded and suitable for the paint system before spraying.
- Clean and degrease the surface to remove dirt, silicone, grease and contamination.
- Sand the substrate to create the correct surface profile for adhesion.
- Apply primer if needed on bare metal, repaired areas or suitable plastics.
- Mix or activate the paint correctly according to the product instructions.
- Apply 2 to 3 thin coats with controlled overlap.
- Allow flash-off between coats so solvents can evaporate before the next layer.
- Let the paint cure fully before heavy use, polishing or exposure to demanding conditions.
2K paint can be applied to prepared metal, primed surfaces, certain plastics with the correct primer or adhesion promoter, alloy wheels and motorcycle parts. Always check product instructions before use.
For paint in a can, the mixing ratio is often 2:1 by volume, meaning 2 parts paint and 1 part hardener. Product instructions are always leading, as not every activated paint system is identical.
Flash-off time is the waiting time between coats. Dry time is when the surface can be handled more safely. Full cure time is when the paint has reached its final hardness and resistance. These times depend on temperature, humidity, layer thickness and paint system.
After mixing or activating 2K paint, the product has a limited pot life or use window. Always follow the product label, technical data sheet and safety data sheet.
Prepare your job with primers, degreasers and paint spray guns.
Safety and UK usage guidance
Many 2K paint systems may contain isocyanates and require suitable respiratory protection, ventilation and safe working conditions. Casual indoor spraying without proper PPE is not recommended.
Always read the product label, technical data sheet and safety data sheet before use. These documents provide the correct instructions for mixing, activation, application, drying, disposal and personal protection.
In the UK, correct use depends on the product type, application method and working environment. Always follow UK guidance, product instructions and manufacturer safety information before spraying 2K automotive paint.
Use suitable respirators and respiratory protection, safety equipment and read our advice about 1K vs 2K paint where available.
