2K Clear Coat

2K clear coat is a two-pack transparent topcoat made from clear lacquer and hardener. Once activated, it cures into a hard, durable finish with stronger chemical, UV and scratch resistance than 1K clear coat.

It is commonly used on cars, motorcycles, alloy wheels, bicycles, smart repairs and larger refinishing jobs. 2K clear coat is suitable for trade professionals and serious DIY users who want a durable finish with good gloss retention, fuel resistance and polishability.

  • Choose aerosol: For small repairs, smart repair, mirror caps, trims and loose parts.
  • Choose can or tin: For spray gun work, larger panels and professional refinishing.
  • Choose the finish: High gloss, matt or satin depending on the final look you want.

What is the difference between 1K and 2K clear coat?

1K clear coat dries by solvent evaporation. 2K clear coat cures chemically with a hardener, which creates a harder and more resistant finish.

2K clear coat is usually the better choice when durability matters. It offers stronger chemical resistance, better fuel resistance, improved long-term gloss retention and a harder finish than most 1K clear coats.

1K clear coat can be a practical choice for simpler jobs, smaller cosmetic repairs or less demanding applications. It is easier to use because it does not need activation or mixing with hardener.

  • Choose 2K clear coat: Automotive refinishing, smart repair, alloy wheels, motorcycle parts and surfaces exposed to weather, fuel or chemicals.
  • Choose 1K clear coat: Simple repairs, light-duty projects and jobs where ease of use is more important than maximum durability.

How to choose the right 2K clear coat

Aerosol or can?

A 2K clear coat aerosol is useful for small repairs, smart repairs, mirror caps, trims, alloy wheels, motorcycle fairings, bicycle frames and loose parts. It is a convenient choice when you do not want to use a spray gun.

2K clear coat in a can or tin is the better option for spray gun work, full panels and larger refinishing jobs. It gives more control over quantity, spray setup and application.

High gloss, matt or satin?

High gloss clear coat is used for a deep OEM-style finish on cars such as Volkswagen, BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, Jaguar and Land Rover. It is the most common choice for modern automotive refinishing.

Matt clear coat creates a low-sheen finish for custom styling and specific design work. Semi gloss or satin clear coat sits between gloss and matt for a softer, more subtle finish.

DIY smart repair or professional panel work?

For DIY smart repair, an activated aerosol can be practical because the hardener is built into the can and mixed before use. For professional panel work, clear coat in a can is usually preferred because it is applied with a spray gun and can be adjusted to the job.

What does HS, MS or UHS mean?

HS, MS and UHS refer to the solids content of the clear coat. Higher solids products provide more build and are often preferred for larger panels and bodyshop-style refinishing results.

What to buy with 2K clear coat

  • Hardener if required for the product.
  • Thinner if recommended by the technical data sheet.
  • Mixing cups for accurate measuring.
  • Tack cloths for removing fine dust before spraying.
  • Degreaser for surface preparation.
  • Spray gun filters for clean material transfer.
  • A suitable respirator and PPE for safe application.

How to apply 2K clear coat

  1. Clean the surface and remove dirt, dust and contamination.
  2. Degrease thoroughly using a suitable degreaser or panel wipe.
  3. Sand or prepare the surface according to the paint system.
  4. Apply basecoat if required and allow the correct flash-off time.
  5. Mix or activate the clear coat following the manufacturer’s TDS.
  6. Spray 2 to 3 coats where recommended, with correct flash-off between coats.
  7. Allow the clear coat to cure before handling, sanding or polishing.
  8. Wet sand and polish if needed once the coating has cured sufficiently.

Mix ratio, thinner percentage, flash-off time and pot life can differ by product. Many 2K clear coats use a 2:1 mix ratio and are applied in 2 to 3 coats, but the manufacturer’s technical data sheet is always leading.

Activated 2K aerosols have a limited usable life after activation, so prepare the job before pressing the activation button.

  • Avoid wrong mix ratios: Too much or too little hardener can affect curing and finish quality.
  • Allow enough flash-off: Trapped solvents can affect gloss and curing.
  • Do not spray too dry or too wet: Poor application can cause texture, runs or reduced finish quality.
  • Watch temperature and humidity: Cold or damp conditions can affect drying and curing.

Prepare your job with basecoat and car paint, spray guns, thinners, mixing cups and sandpaper and abrasives.

Drying time, curing and polishing

Dust dry means dust is less likely to stick to the surface. Touch dry means the surface can be handled lightly. Polishable means the clear coat has cured enough for wet sanding or polishing. Fully cured means the coating has reached its final hardness and resistance.

Drying and curing depend on the product, film build, temperature, ventilation and humidity. Many 2K clear coats are dust dry within hours, polishable after suitable curing time and fully cured later depending on product and conditions.

Yes, 2K clear coat can usually be wet sanded and polished once it is sufficiently cured according to the TDS. Use suitable polishing compounds and sandpaper or abrasives for finishing.

Where can you use 2K clear coat?

2K clear coat is commonly applied over basecoat, metallic and pearlescent paint systems. It is also commonly used over modern basecoat systems, including water-based basecoats, when the paint system instructions are followed.

  • Cars: Bonnet, bumper, wing, doors, mirror caps and full panels.
  • Alloy wheels: For added durability and gloss over compatible wheel paint systems.
  • Motorcycles: Fairings, tanks and painted parts.
  • Bicycles: Frames and custom painted components.
  • Body panels: Smart repair, panel repair and refinishing.
  • Furniture and industrial parts: Where the coating system is compatible.

Existing paint can only be clear coated when the surface is compatible, properly prepared, degreased and sanded if required. For the full system, view our car paint, alloy wheel paint, primers and degreasers.

Safety and UK regulations

Some 2K clear coats may contain isocyanates and require suitable respiratory protection. Always use appropriate PPE, work in a well-ventilated area and read the product SDS and TDS before use.

In the UK, product type, ingredients and application method may be subject to health, safety and workplace requirements. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and relevant UK guidance before using any two-pack clear coat.

  • Respirator: Use suitable respiratory protection for the product and application method.
  • Gloves: Protect hands from solvents and activated coating material.
  • Eye protection: Helps protect against spray mist and splashes.
  • Ventilation: Work in a suitable, controlled and well-ventilated area.
  • Correct storage: Store clear coat, hardener and aerosols according to the product instructions.

Browse respirators and PPE and safety products before starting your project.

Frequently asked questions about 2K Clear Coat

How many coats of clearcoat should I apply?

Applying 2 coats of clearcoat is enough to have enough layer thickness. Do you want the clear coat to have more ‘body’? Then apply another layer of clear coat.

How much time between coats of clear coat?

5 minutes time between coats of clear coat is sufficient. By keeping a time of 5 minutes between coats of clear coat, the varnish has enough time to evaporate.

What is 2K Clearcoat?

2K clear coat is a transparent lacquer consisting of 2 components. A 2K clear coat is scratch-resistant, petrol-resistant, weather-resistant and UV-resistant. 2K clear coat has been voted the best clear coat for over base coat and colour coat.

How do you apply 2K Clear Varnish?

2K Clear Varnish is applied with a spray can or sprayer. A 2K aerosol can of clear lacquer is applied by means of a spray, so you do not need a special paint sprayer. If you have 2K clear coat in a can, you apply it with a spray gun.

What is the difference between 1K and 2K clear coat?

The difference between 1K and 2K clear coat is that a 2-component clear coat is scratch-resistant, petrol-resistant and chemical-resistant. However, the difference between 1K and 2K clear coat is that a 1K clear coat is fast-drying and a 2K clear coat needs to dry longer because it consists of 2 components.

Which 2K lacquer is best?

Which 2K lacquer is best can vary from user to user and application to application. It was recently declared that CROP 2K lacquer is best under all conditions and at different temperatures. It is also best to apply CROP 2K lacquer over all paints and lacquer types.
