High gloss clear coat for professional results

High gloss clear coat is the finish with which you provide the base coat of a car with maximum gloss, long-term protection and a factory-original look. As specialists in automotive coatings, we at CROP know how important a high-quality finish is for the end result. Our high gloss clear coat products protect against scratches, UV rays, chemicals and weathering, but also provide that deep glossy look you expect from a professional paint job.

Why cars have high gloss clear coat as standard

Virtually all cars are factory finished with a high-gloss clear coat by default. This is because a high gloss effect clear coat gives a luxurious and sleek look. In addition, you can easily polish scratches and damage from a high gloss clear coat. A silk or matte clear coat on cars is very specific and therefore not standard. Do you want to paint a car, refinish individual parts or repair paint damage? So then you need a high gloss clear coat for an invisible, factory-original repair.

The difference between matt, silk and high gloss clear coat

There are different gloss levels within clear coats: matte, silk gloss and high gloss. The gloss level determines the reflection and appearance of the paint color underneath. Thus, you can choose from the following clear coats:

  • Matte clear coat gives a modern, understated look, but is more sensitive to dirt and more difficult to restore.
  • Satin gloss clear coat offers a balance of gloss and softness with a touch of satin, often used for industrial or decorative applications.
  • High-gloss clear coat provides the highest level of gloss with a mirror effect, which is ideal for automotive applications.

In short, for automotive spraying, high gloss clear coat is by far the most commonly used gloss level. With this, you match the original factory finish and ensure a durable and aesthetically perfect finish.

Importance of good pre-finishing for clear coat

For a perfect end result, the preparation of the substrate is crucial for spraying the clear coat tightly. Insufficient preparation leads to dull spots, adhesion problems or irregularities in the gloss. Therefore, follow these steps:

  1. Thoroughly clean and degrease the surface with a silicone remover.
  2. Fine sand the surface with 800 to 1000 grit for even adhesion.
  3. Apply the base coat (color) and allow it to dry completely.
  4. Finish with the high gloss clear coat within the specified refinishing time for optimum adhesion.

Proper preparation ensures that the clear coat flows evenly, adheres well and protects the surface from external influences.

Dust or orange peel in the high-gloss clear coat? How to restore it

After spraying the high-gloss clear coat, it is possible that dust particles or a structure of a so-called orange peel may appear. No worries! These irregularities are easy to fix. To remove dust from the varnish or repair the orange peel in the varnish, follow the steps below:

  1. Let the clear coat cure completely (check the drying time of the varnish).
  2. Start wet sanding with special waterproof sandpaper (2000 to 3000 grit ) until the surface is matte.
  3. Polish the varnish with a good compound and hard foam pad for a mirror-smooth shine.

This is how you restore the clear coat and give the car that factory-fresh high-gloss look again.

When do you choose an aerosol or can?

At CROP you order high gloss clear coat in spray can or can. Depending on your project, you choose the right packaging and quality (1K or 2K). Both have their advantages:

  • Spray can: perfect for small repairs, spot repair or for those who don't have spray equipment.
  • Can: ideal for use with a paint sprayer, offers more control and a more professional end result.
