When to choose canned clear coat?

Canned clear coat is the perfect choice when you want to use your spray gun to apply the clear coat. In practice, a can of clear coat is often chosen when you want to refinish a hood, bumper, side screen, door or entire car with a paint spray gun. Unlike spray cans, canned clear coat offers more control, longer application time and is suitable for professional use. Choose canned clear coat if you:

  • Working with an HVLP spray gun or gravity cup spray gun
  • Want to varnish larger surfaces
  • Want to varnish small car parts as a professional
  • Looking for the best and most professional result

What types of canned clear coat are there?

At CROP you will find different types of canned clear coat, each with unique properties and applications. For example, you can choose online from cans of 1K and 2K clear coat in different gloss levels such as high gloss, silk gloss and matte. Each type of canned clear coat has its own characteristics, advantages and disadvantages. Read more about them below!

Canned 1K clear coat: easy and quick to use

A 1K canned clear coat is a user-friendly varnish because it does not need a hardener. You can therefore say that this clear coat can be used immediately without additives. This type of varnish is especially suitable for smaller repair jobs or when speed and convenience are important. Because this clear protective lacquer dries quickly, the chance of dust inclusion is minimal. Note that cans of 1K clear coat are less resistant to external influences such as chemicals, UV radiation and fuels. For applications where long-term protection is required, we recommend a 2K clear coat.

Canned 2K clear coat: for the best result

A 2K clear coat in a can is the standard in the world of automotive refinishing. This 2K varnish consists of two components: the varnish and a hardener. Only after mixing is the varnish ready for use. The result of a can of 2K clear coat is an extremely hard-wearing, scratch-resistant and chemical-resistant top coat that lasts for years. In addition, 2K clear varnish is:

  • UV resistant (does not yellow)
  • Petrol and acid resistant
  • Suitable for professional use and large projects
  • Available in different gloss levels
  • Factory original

What is the mixing ratio of canned 2K clear coat?

For an optimal end result, accurate mixing of 2K clear coat is crucial. To mix the 2 components, we always recommend using a mixing cup with mixing ratio as indicated on the product. Add the clear coat first, then the hardener, and stir carefully until a homogeneous mass is formed. The ratio of the two components depends on the type of varnish. Going forward, the mixing ratio of 2K clear varnish is 2 to 1. This means that to 1 liter of varnish, you add 500ml of hardener etc. Tip from CROP: Mix only the amount you actually need. Once mixed 2K varnish has a limited processing time (pot life).

Air dry clear coat increases efficiency and reduces costs

Do you work in an environment without a spray booth or want to save on drying time and energy costs? Then air dry clear coat in cans is the best choice. This lacquer is specially designed to dry at room temperature without infrared or oven. By using a can of air dry clear coat, you also avoid the chance of dust and dirt particles in the varnish during curing.

Advantages of air-drying varnish:

  • Dust dry after 15 minutes
  • Completely dry after 60 minutes
  • Immediately sandable and polishable
  • Ideal for spot repair and quick repairs
  • Perfect when you do not have a spray booth

Clear Coat in Cans vs. Aerosol. What are the differences?

Although clear coat in aerosol is also available, a can of clear coat offers more options for large-scale and professional applications. If you use a paint sprayer, canned clear coat gives:

  • More control over coating thickness
  • A more even and tight result
  • Higher coverage and better adhesion

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you apply clear varnish?

Clear varnish is applied with a spray can or a paint sprayer. There are several ways to apply clear coat. If you apply clear varnish, make sure you apply at least 2 layers.

Which varnish is best?

Which varnish is best is determined by the user. For a plain uni colour, a 2K lacquer is best. If the colour lacquer is metallic or pearlescent, a 1K lacquer is best.

How many coats of clearcoat should I apply?

Applying 2 coats of clearcoat is enough to have enough layer thickness. Do you want the clear coat to have more ‘body’? Then apply another layer of clear coat.

How much time between coats of clear coat?

5 minutes time between coats of clear coat is sufficient. By keeping a time of 5 minutes between coats of clear coat, the varnish has enough time to evaporate.

Why use clear varnish in a can

Why use clear coat in a can? Because it allows you to apply the transparent lacquer with a spray gun. You pour the clear coat from the can into the spray gun for application. The main reasons to use clear coat from a can are its higher coverage efficiency and the ability to spray more evenly and professionally.
