Spraying car paint yourself with a spray can: this is how you do it

Spray painting your own car may seem like a challenge, but with the right preparation and products, it is absolutely achievable! As automotive paint specialists, we explain in this blog article step by step how to best apply car paint using a spray can. We also advise you on which products you need and what to watch out for to achieve a professional result.

Choose the right spray can for your project

Everything starts with choosing the correct color of the car paint spray can for your project. Do you want to paint a part of your car, repair paint damage, or perform a complete respray? Then it is essential to buy a spray can with the correct color, based on the vehicle's original color code or name. As experts in automotive spray cans, at CROP you can buy your spray can according to your car brand’s original formula. That way, you’re sure to get a perfect color match! Want a new color? You can choose from our wide range of RAL colors and metallic paints.

Ensure good surface preparation and adhesion

A smooth and even result starts with preparation. A well-prepared surface ensures better adhesion and a more attractive final result. It is important to lightly sand the surface with fine sandpaper (grit 400 to 800). This removes small imperfections and ensures that the paint adheres well to the surface. After sanding, it is important to thoroughly clean and degrease the surface. Use a good degreaser to remove dirt, grease, dust, and silicone. This prevents adhesion problems and bubbles in the paint. Attention: do not use household products like brake cleaner or acetone, as they can react with the paint. Always choose a high-quality automotive paint degreaser!

Apply a primer for better adhesion

A primer is necessary to ensure the best adhesion and a solid, long-lasting result. Whether you are painting on bare metal, plastic, or old paint, a good primer ensures adhesion and protection.

Spray painting in 7 steps

Now that the surface is well prepared, you can start spray painting. For the best result, follow these 7 steps:

  1. Make sure you are in a dry, dust-free area at room temperature. The spray can itself should also be at room temperature!
  2. Shake the can for at least 2 minutes before use to thoroughly mix all pigments.
  3. Always do a test spray on a sample to check the color. This avoids surprises!
  4. Hold the can 15–20 cm from the surface while spraying.
  5. Spray in smooth, horizontal movements from left to right.
  6. Work in thin, even layers to avoid runs.
  7. Wait 5 minutes between each coat at 20 °C to allow the paint to evaporate and dry properly.

Attention: Are you applying metallic paint? First apply 2 solid layers, then finish with a mist coat. Increase the distance slightly to avoid color clouding.

Use clear coat for protection and shine

After applying the base color, it is important to protect it with clear coat. This prevents discoloration due to UV light as well as damage from dirt, stone chips, and chemicals. Additionally, clear coat gives the base coat a glossy finish.

When to apply clear coat?

As soon as the paint is dust-dry (usually after 30 minutes at 20 °C), you can start applying the clear coat. If it is colder, we recommend waiting a little longer before applying the protective clear coat.

Which clear coat to choose?

As automotive paint specialists, at CROP you will find a wide choice of different clear coats, from quick-drying 1K clear coat to scratch-resistant 2K clear coat that is resistant to chemicals and petrol. On NonPaints.com, you can choose from:

Extra tips for using a car paint spray can

With these extra tips, you'll finish your spray paint job in the best possible way:

  • Use a spray can handle for better control, comfort, and consistency.
  • Clean the spray can after use: turn it upside down and spray until only propellant comes out. This keeps the nozzle clean and the can reusable.
  • Always work in thin layers; several thin layers are better than one thick one.
  • Allow each layer to dry thoroughly to avoid adhesion or gloss problems.
