Chrome Effect in Can - MIPA Vicrom Mirror Glaze Paint

MIPA Vicrom Chrome Effect Mirror Glaze is a basecoat to create a chrome looking surface with mirror effect. Perfectly suitable to coat rims, garnish mouldings, attached parts, etc. In order to protect this coating against weathering, UV and mechanical strain just overcoat with solvent-borne Mipa 2K-clearcoats.

How to spray MIPA Vicrom Chrome Effect?

Use a spray gun with a 0,8mm, 1mm or 1,2mm nozzle opening.

  1. Is the surface untreated? Always make sure to use an adhesive primer.
  2. Use Mipa 2K topcoat black glossy as the first coating. Overcoat within 4 days. Allow this first coat to dry at least 8 hours at 20 °C or 30 minutes at 60 °C.
  3. Do not sand the first coating before applying Mipa Vicrom „mirror glaze“ ! If necessary, any defects in paintwork should be polished. It is essential to get a perfectly smooth and faultless pre-coated surface to achieve optimal mirror effects.
  4. When applying Mipa Vicrom „mirror glaze“ it is very important to ensure that only very thin and uniform layers are applied. Therefore we recommend keeping a larger distance between spray gun and the object surface and not applying too wet coatings. In fact Mipa Vicrom „mirror glaze“ is applied carefully as mist coat to achieve the very best mirror effect. Keep in mind: The more the black first coating shines through the better is the mirror effect.
  5. Overcoat Mipa Vicrom „mirror glaze“ after approx. 45-60 minutes of intermediate flash-off time at room temperature or after approx. 30 minutes at 60 °C with Mipa 2K solvent-based clearcoats. Apply a very thin, first layer of clearcoat in order not to dissolve partially the basecoat Mipa Vicrom „mirror glaze“ (this would degrade significantly the mirror effect). After an intermediate flash-off time of approx. 10-20 minutes the clearcoat can be applied completely.
  6. Let dry for at least 24 to 48 hours!

Frequently Asked Questions

Should clear coat be applied over car paint?

Yes, you should use clear coat over 1K automotive paint to protect the color. When buying clear coat, you have options such as high-gloss, satin, and matte, as well as 1K and 2K. 2K clear coat is the original factory high-gloss finish and is the most commonly chosen varnish.

How many layers of car paint should I apply?

The number of layers of automotive paint you need to apply depends on the coverage of the color. Usually, 3 layers are sufficient. However, for lighter color paints that have less coverage, we recommend applying an additional layer of color until you achieve the desired result.

How long should car paint cure?

The curing time for automotive paint depends on temperature, humidity, and layer thickness. At higher temperatures, the curing process is faster compared to lower temperatures. Additionally, 1K automotive paint dries faster than 2K automotive paint.

What is the drying time for car paint?

The drying time of automotive paint is determined by 3 factors: layer thickness, temperature, and humidity. We recommend monitoring this yourself until the paint is dust-dry. Once this is the case, the paint can be over-sprayed with clear coat or handled!
