Should clear coat be applied over car paint?

Yes, you should use clear coat over 1K automotive paint to protect the color. When buying clear coat, you have options such as high-gloss, satin, and matte, as well as 1K and 2K. 2K clear coat is the original factory high-gloss finish and is the most commonly chosen varnish.

Does what it needs to do
The latest purchase I can't say anything about that yet. After years, I did get to use my old bus. It turned out there was a leak at the valve/rim, and that's not really the best place. With a leak in the tread, the filler swings against the outside and not exactly the inside. Still, the leak was fixed just fine and was fortunately able to get home driving.
