Everything you need to know about oil filters

A properly functioning oil filter is essential for your engine. Everyone knows that engine oil can only perform optimally when it is properly filtered. As the name suggests, an oil filter prevents dirt, metal particles and other impurities from damaging the engine. As a specialist, you can buy professional oil filters from CROP, including the world-renowned K&N oil filter known for its long life and excellent performance for filtering engine oil.

What is an oil filter?

An oil filter is a small, yet essential, part of the engine. It ensures that dirt particles, metal flakes and other impurities are filtered out of the engine oil. This keeps the engine oil clean, which is essential for proper lubrication of all parts in the engine. Without a properly functioning oil filter, engine oil cannot do its job properly. This can lead to excessive wear and even serious engine damage. Therefore, the filter is a crucial part of maintaining your car, motorcycle or other internal combustion engine vehicle.

When should you replace an oil filter?

Oil filters do not last indefinitely. In fact, when you change the engine oil, in most cases you must also change the oil filter. Generally, the rule is: replace the oil filter every 10,000 to 15,000 kilometers or at every oil change. For some vehicles or driving styles (such as sporty or many short trips), a shorter interval applies. Therefore, always check your vehicle manufacturer's recommendations. Do you wait too long to change the oil filter? Then the filter gets clogged and the oil can no longer flow properly. Result: poor lubrication, higher engine temperatures and extra wear and tear. A shame and easy to prevent.

How long does an oil filter last?

How long an oil filter lasts depends on several factors. Consider your driving style, the type of engine oil you use and the quality of the oil filter itself. In most cases, a standard oil filter will last between 10,000 and 15,000 kilometers. If you use a high-end brand like the K&N oil filter, you can count on better filtration and longer life. Still, regularity remains important. Even the best filters need to be replaced on time to keep the engine in top condition.

Changing the oil filter yourself in 7 steps

Changing an oil filter yourself is done in 7 steps. Even if you are not an experienced car mechanic or professional, with the step-by-step plan below you can replace the oil filter yourself so that your engine is like new again.

Step 1: Get the right oil filter

Before you start replacing the oil filter, it is important that you have the right one beforehand. To check which type of oil filter is right for your car, check the owner's manual or use the license plate check.

Step 2: Make sure the engine is cooled down

Since you're doing the repair under the hood, it's important that the engine has cooled down. Here, it is essential that both the block, the oil and surrounding engine parts are completely cool.

Step 3: Drain the engine oil

In this step, it is important to remove the old oil from the engine. Place an oil collection tray under the car and unscrew the drain plug. Then drain the engine oil completely into the catch basin.

Step 4: Remove the old oil filter

If necessary, use an oil filter wrench if the filter is stuck. Again, drain the oil.

Step 5: Install the new oil filter

It's time to install the new oil filter. Lightly lubricate the rubber ring of the new filter with engine oil. Then tighten the oil filter hand-tight.

Step 6: Fill up with new motor oil

Now that the new oil filter is fitted, you can also refill new motor oil. To do this, screw back the drain plug and fill the oil into the engine. After refilling, check the oil level with the dipstick.

Step 7: Start the engine

You're done! Finally, let the engine idle for a while. While doing so, immediately check for leaks at the filter and see if the oil light goes out.
