Car Painting in Summer: Tips & Products

Subjects: How to Create , Car paint 01 May 2025

Summer brings not only sun and light for car painters, but also extra challenges. High temperatures, dry air, and changing humidity can affect the paint result. As specialists in car paint, we at CROP share tips to help you achieve a smooth and professional paint result even on warm days.

Choose the right hardener for summer temperatures

In warm weather, car paint dries faster. Therefore, it is important to choose the right hardener. Too quick drying can lead to orange peel, runs, or uneven paint flow. On hot days, use a hardener with a long drying time. This gives the paint more time to flow out smoothly, resulting in a smoother surface and a professional result.

High humidity? Use solvent-based paint

When spraying paint, high humidity can cause problems. To avoid this, we recommend using solvent-based paint instead of water-based paint. Even in high temperatures and humidity, this solvent-containing paint remains consistent in quality and easy to apply.

Spray in the morning

The temperature is highest around midday. That’s why it’s smart to perform spray jobs in the morning. Then the air is still cooler and more stable. By planning wisely, you can avoid problems like too quick drying, solvent entrapment, or color differences.

Always wear full personal protection in summer

In summer, it can get warm in the space where you spray car paint. Nevertheless, wearing full personal protective equipment (PPE) remains essential. Think of a spray suit, nitrile gloves, spray mask, and safety goggles. These protect you against both solvents and paint mist, and also ensure that sweat doesn’t form droplets that could fall onto the paint. A small sweat droplet can cause a major disruption in the paint layer.

Extra tip: regularly check the viscosity

At higher temperatures, the viscosity of paints decreases, affecting how the paint sprays from the gun. Regularly measure the paint thickness (DIN cup) and adjust the dilution if necessary. This prevents the paint from becoming too thin and running, or too thick and flowing poorly.
