What is sandpaper?

Sandpaper is firm paper to which abrasive grains of an abrasive material have been applied with glue. Sandpaper is used for sanding. By sanding with sandpaper, you remove an old coat of paint, automotive paint, clear coat or make a surface smoother. Because of this, sandpaper is widely used by painters, car damage repairers, handymen and hobbyists. Sandpaper is also used to roughen a smooth surface, to obtain adhesion for bonding, varnishing or painting.

Abrasive grade is indicated by a P

Coarseness of sandpaper is indicated by the letter P followed by a number. The lower the P number, the coarser the grain on the sandpaper is. If you have a P number with a high number, then the sandpaper contains a fine grit. You use coarse sandpaper to quickly remove old paint, rust, varnish and stain by sanding. A coarse sanding grit commonly used is P80. Do you want to lightly sand and mattify the surface or material? Then we recommend a fine sanding grit starting at P600 and finer.

With what coarse sanding? Use the sanding ladder!

Want to start sanding but don't know which grit to use? Our sanding ladder will help you choose the right grit to sand with sandpaper. By sanding in steps to a grit that gets progressively finer, you'll get great results. Read more about the sanding scale below.

  • P80 to P150: for removing paint, varnish, rust and corrosion by sanding. If desired, you could sand even coarser with P60 grit on the paper.
  • P150 to P220: you want to sand existing paint where the surface does not need to be completely stripped bare. Then sand in steps from P150 to P220.
  • P180 to P320: Have you applied a primer or primer and want to sand them before applying a new coat of paint? Then sand them lightly in steps from P180 to P320 grit for a nice smooth result.
  • P1500 to P3000: Do you want to wet sand and wax car paint? Then use this special waterproof sandpaper that has been specially developed for wet sanding. You do this with water or degreaser.

Waterproof sandpaper

Waterproof sandpaper is used specifically in combination with water or degreaser for wet sanding. Because of this, wet sanding is also called wet sanding. By using waterproof sandpaper with water you get a nice smooth and even result. The water during sanding with waterproof sandpaper makes the grain finer and less deep scratches. In practice, you use waterproof sandpaper as hand sheets to wet sand car paint and clear coat.

Different sanding grains

With sanding materials, the best results are obtained when the grains are hard and sharp enough. The two most common abrasive grains are the Aluminum Oxide grain and the Silicon Carbide abrasive grain. In addition, you also have Zirconium Oxide abrasive grit which is used for sanding material.

Sandpaper with Aluminum Oxide Grit

This abrasive grain is a commonly used abrasive grain for most universal sanding jobs. The Aluminum Oxide abrasive grain has the property of maintaining constant hardness. In addition, the grain wears out less quickly than other grains.

Abrasive with Silicon Carbide Grit

The Silicon Carbide abrasive grain has incredibly high hardness. It is great for sanding hard woods, MDF and the hard automotive paints. Because this grit "gnaws" at the sanding surface, you get a better sanding result.
